CSUN 2018: An Opportunity to Witness Significant Advances to Accessibility
Being at the CSUN Assistive Technology Conference is providing us an opportunity to meet with the people who are positively affected when we remove communication barriers and physical barriers. For us as a company, it is one thing to create Braille, large print, audio, and digital document; it is another thing to hear from the people using these products as tools to maintain their independence.
Including everyone in life and business
This year the overwhelming theme is ADA Accessibility is a Human Right. The most discussed topic is a recent legislative act (HB 620) that threatens to weaken the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA). So far, the US Senate has not drafted a counterpart to this bill. The bill seems to have been created with good intentions, to prevent unscrupulous practices from law firms. The consensus of the presenters is, there are some “unintended consequences” that need to be understood and further examined, before the legislation of this caliber should be passed. They are asking that people contact their local Senators to ask for a complete revision of the bill, should the Senate draft a counterpart.
